On March 20 2023, the OliveCulture (‘Holistic and Multi-professional Mechanism for a Pakistani Olive Oil Value Chain’) team, along with CIHEAM Bari’s experts Costantino Parma and Giuseppe Cavallo, visited the olive nurseries at the Agricultural Research Institute in Quetta.
Over 40 operators, including technicians and farmers participated in the visit during which Giuseppe Cavallo emphasised the need to adopt modern nursery-raising practices, use quality soil media and planting material, and apply proper grafting techniques. The assessment activity was combined with practical training on modern nursery management.
The OliveCulture team also visited the Baluchistan Agricultural Research and Development Centre (BARDAC) to observe and assess the status of the nursery planting materials grown in advanced greenhouses and tunnels.
On March 21 2023, the OliveCulture team travelled to Abdul Jabbar farm in Sarki Jungle Loralai district, a remote area well-suited for training in olive tree nursery and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), focusing on promotion, certification and standardisation. The farm grows more than 3500 plants of different varieties, namely Arbequina, Arbosona, Coratina, Frantoio, Genlik, and Leccino, and covers an area of 60 acres.
Moreover, a training session on SOPs in nursery management was organised in Loralai with over 85 participants, including technicians, farmers, and representatives of the Baluchistan Ruler Support Program (BRSP). Giuseppe Cavallo gave a practical demonstration of modern SOPs for nursery management, highlighting the need for a standardisation and certification scheme.
All the farmers, technicians and operators were awarded an attendance certificate and received brochures in English and Urdu illustrating the main features of the olive’s cultivation and Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). At the end of this two-day event, Costantino Parma and Giuseppe Cavallo planted some young olive plants to deliver a positive message to promote this crop.
Through these training activities, the OliveCulture project aims to reach Pakistan’s remote and high-risk areas to promote modern nursery practices and standardisation and certification of the olive crop. The theoretical and practical sessions held by CIHEAM Bari’s experts attracted wide participation and interest from local farmers and technicians. Raising awareness on the use of Good Agricultural Practices for the olive tree will help improve the productivity and quality of the crop across the country.
Il 20 marzo 2023, il team del progetto OliveCulture (“Holistic and Multi-professional Mechanism for a Pakistani Olive Oil Value Chain” ), accompagnato dagli esperti Costantino Parma e Giuseppe Cavallo del CIHEAM Bari, ha visitato i vivai olivicoli dell'Istituto di Ricerca Agricola di Quetta.
Oltre 40 operatori, tra tecnici e agricoltori, hanno partecipato alla visita durante la quale Giuseppe Cavallo ha sottolineato la necessità di adottare pratiche moderne di conduzione, di utilizzare terricci e materiale vegetativo di qualità e di impiegare tecniche d’innesto adeguate. All’attività di valutazione è stata associata una formazione pratica sulla gestione moderna dei vivai.
Il team di OliveCulture, ha visitato anche il Centro di Ricerca e Sviluppo Agricolo del Belucistan (BARDAC) per verificare e valutare lo stato dei materiali vivaistici nelle serre e nei tunnel di ultima generazione.
Il 21 marzo, il team di OliveCulture si è poi recato nell'azienda agricola “Abdul Jabbar”, nel distretto di Sarki Jungle Loralai, un'area remota e idonea per la formazione sul vivaismo olivicolo e sulle Procedure Operative Standard (SOP), con particolare riferimento alla promozione, alla certificazione e alla standardizzazione. L'azienda dispone di un patrimonio di oltre 3500 piante di diverse varietà, tra le quali Arbequina, Arbosona, Coratina, Frantoio, Genlik e Leccino, e si estende su una superficie di circa 25 ettari.
Inoltre, a Loralai è stata organizzata una sessione di formazione dedicata alle SOP per la gestione dei vivai, alla quale hanno partecipato oltre 85 operatori, tra cui tecnici, agricoltori e rappresentanti del Baluchistan Ruler Support Program (BRSP). Giuseppe Cavallo ha effettuato una dimostrazione pratica delle moderne SOP per la conduzione dei vivai, evidenziando la necessità di dotarsi di un sistema di standardizzazione e certificazione.
A tutti gli agricoltori, tecnici e operatori del settore sono stati consegnati gli attestati di partecipazione insieme a delle brochure divulgative sull'olivo e sulle buone pratiche agricole (GAP) per questa coltura, in lingua inglese e urdu. Al termine delle due giornate, Costantino Parma e Giuseppe Cavallo hanno piantato degli astoni di olivo per lanciare un messaggio positivo per la promozione di questa coltura.
Attraverso queste attività di formazione, il progetto OliveCulture intende raggiungere le aree remote e a rischio del Pakistan per promuovere le moderne pratiche vivaistiche e i sistemi di standardizzazione e certificazione della coltura dell’olivo. Le sessioni teoriche e pratiche tenute dagli esperti del CIHEAM Bari hanno ottenuto un’ampia adesione e suscitato un grande interesse degli agricoltori e dei tecnici locali. La sensibilizzazione all’utilizzo delle buone pratiche agricole per l’olivo favorirà il miglioramento della produttività e della qualità della coltura in tutto il Paese.
The first International Workshop of the “Promoting EU integration through sustainable agriculture and green rural development in the EUSAIR non-EU countries” project was held in Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) on 21st March 2023, gathering 58 experts from seven countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia).
The event was organized by CIHEAM Bari and the Directorate for European Integration of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) in support of Bosnia and Herzegovina during its Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR).
The workshop focused on ‘Strengthening the promotion of innovative start-ups and job opportunities in rural areas of the EUSAIR countries’.

L'evento è stato organizzato dal CIHEAM Bari e dalla Direzione per l'integrazione europea del Consiglio dei Ministri della Bosnia-Erzegovina. Il progetto è finanziato dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale (MAECI) a sostegno della Bosnia-Erzegovina nel suo periodo di presidenza della Strategia UE per la Regione Adriatica e Ionica (EUSAIR).

UniClaD: a project to improve universities' capacity to develop innovative and sustainable clusters
Improving universities' capacity to engage and participate in the development of clusters based on innovation and sustainability principles, strengthening collaboration between the business sector and Higher Education institutions (HEIs), is the main objective of the international project UniClaD (www.uniclad.net), with more than twenty partners from European and Asian countries and a budget of almost € 1 million. The project, which will last three years (2020-2023), is funded by the European Commission, under the Erasmus+ KA2 programme. UniClaD shall work across competence centres (agro-industrial clusters) set up within HEIs. The clusters will ensure and strengthen connections with other organisations, encourage farms to develop innovations created in HEIs and promote collaborative activities based on mutual interest. This will be possible through administrative support, a legal framework and research activities that meet real needs. In particular, clusters will be created in the field of agriculture, agrifood processing industry, with a focus on local products, biotechnology and poultry breeding, rural tourism, aquaculture and water management. The project is coordinated by the University of Applied Sciences of Kaunas (Lithuania) and brings together partners from Austria, Spain, Italy (CIHEAM Bari), Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Moldova and Azerbaijan.
The programme will include training courses and study tours led by representatives of companies and scientific and research institutions. In addition, dedicated modules will be designed for masters and doctoral curricula. CIHEAM Bari will support the project thanks to its expertise and its network, developed over time, with the agri-food clusters in Italy, in particular by means of dissemination and enhancement actions and planning and organisation of study tours.

CIHEAM Bari is organizing the Advanced specialized course in "Precision Agriculture for the Mediterranean Region" to train professionals from ministries and producer associations in Mediterranean countries with basic knowledge on Information Technology.
An opening workshop will also be held online, as part of the first unit of the course (April 12-18, 2023), to extend participation to other interested people in addition to participants selected to attend the whole course.
The workshop will include a series of seminars by experts from academia, research institutes and business associations to cover the following general topics: general concepts of precision agriculture with a multiscale and multisectoral approach, opportunities and constraints, key technologies, CIHEAM innovations, adaptation to the Southern Mediterranean context and role of technology producers and service providers.

Developing strategies for the sustainable control of the spittlebug (Philaenus spumarius) and identifying its role in Xylella fastidiosa transmission are the main focus of the SOS project, set to be launched on 22 March at 9.30 AM at CIHEAM Bari’s Cosimo Lacirignola campus.
Philaenus spumarius is the main vector of Xylella fastidiosa bacterium, the most destructive pest affecting olive industry in Puglia. When the adult insect sucks the crude sap of an infected plant, it acquires the bacterium that will be retained throughout its life cycle. When it lands on a new plant for feeding, it injects the bacterium, thus spreading the disease.
To date, little is still known about the interactions between the insect, the bacterium and the olive tree, and this prevents the development of an effective and sustainable control strategy that could enable the rehabilitation of affected areas.
Here are some of the questions that the SOS project will seek to answer over the next 36 months.
The SOS project - Developing Sustainable Control Strategies against Philaenus spumarius and Interference with Transmission of Xylella fastidiosa - (funded by M.D. 419161 of 13/09/2022 (MASAF) CUP: D23C22001020001), coordinated by the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Food Science (DISAFA) of Turin University will be carried out jointly with CIHEAM Bari and the University of Foggia (Department of Agricultural Sciences, Food, Natural Resources and Engineering - UNIFG-DAFNE), the University of Bari (Department of Soil, Plant and Food Sciences - UNIBA-DISSPA) and the University of Padua (Department of Agronomy, Food, Natural Resources, Animals and Environment - UNIPD-DAFNAE).
The SOS Project kick-off meeting will be opened by Maurizio Raeli, director of the Italian Institute of CIHEAM, and by the delegates from Puglia Region, Donato Pentassuglia, Councillor for Agriculture, Gianluca Nardone, Director of the Department of Agriculture, Rural and Environmental Development, and Salvatore Infantino, Plant Health Observatory Executive. Domenico Bosco, full professor at the University of Turin, will introduce the SOS project.
The meeting will then move on with technical round tables with the participation of the project partners.
Sviluppare strategie che controllino in modo sostenibile la sputacchina (Philaenus spumarius) e individuino il suo ruolo nella trasmissione di Xylella fastidiosa sono gli argomenti principali del progetto SOS, il cui avvio è in programma il prossimo 22 marzo, alle ore 9.30, nel Campus Cosimo Lacirignola del CIHEAM Bari.
Il Philaenus spumarius è il principale vettore del batterio Xylella fastidiosa, il più dannoso patogeno del sistema olivicolo pugliese. L’insetto adulto, nutrendosi della linfa grezza di una pianta infetta, conserva il batterio per tutto il suo ciclo vitale. Nel momento in cui raggiunge una nuova pianta per nutrirsi, immette il batterio diffondendo la malattia.
Ad oggi, le interazioni tra insetto, batterio e olivo sono ancora poco note e non consentono di sviluppare una strategia di controllo efficace e sostenibile che possa consentire la riqualificazione del territorio colpito.
Sono questi alcuni degli interrogativi a cui il progetto SOS, nell’arco di 36 mesi, cercherà di dare risposte.

Nearly 60 participants from Italy, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Netherlands and Finland attended the Multi-actor Regional Meeting of the project "WATDEV - Climate Smart WATer Management and Sustainable DEVelopment for Food and Agriculture in East Africa", on 8 and 9 March 2023, in Nairobi. The European Commission-DG INTPA project officer, Etienne Coyette, joined the event remotely from Brussels to welcome the participants and underline how relevant WATDEV is for the policies and objectives set by the European Union's DeSIRA Programme, which aims to address and mitigate the problems caused by climate change in East Africa and Egypt, by boosting research and innovation in water and soil management. The EU delegation in Nairobi was represented by Stephen Wathome, who attended and contributed to the discussion at both meetings. The working sessions were introduced by Martino Melli, Director of AICS Cairo, the project's Executive Agency. CIHEAM Bari, scientific lead partner of the project consortium, ensured the scientific coordination of the participatory processes throughout the meeting.
High-level representatives of Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture, project partners and Stakeholder Forum members shared and took stock of the outcomes of local meetings held in the previous months. Stakeholder Forum members and project partners were then divided into working groups and selected best management practices from the ones previously identified to address specific needs for sustainable and efficient water use in agriculture and resilient agro-ecosystems, in the four target African countries. They also identified the implementation sites for the selected practices and the categories of beneficiaries of future awareness-raising and training activities. The WATDEV project Stakeholder Forum is composed of twenty representatives of leading universities and research institutes, national and local public authorities, and value chain extension services from the four WATDEV African countries.
The Multi-actor Regional Meeting, held on 8 March, was hosted by KALRO (Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation) and the first day's discussion was facilitated by ASARECA (Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa).
On 9 March, the first Annual Partnership meeting marked an important milestone for the project partners, who discussed and reviewed the activity plan progress, sharing issues and deadlines for technical, administrative, financial and communication management. Chaired by Claudio Bogliotti from CIHEAM Bari, the meeting allowed the partners to outline the work plan for the second year, in particular the timeline for capacity building activities in the selected sites and feasibility studies with local stakeholders that will provide data for the project modelling phases.

Circa 60 partecipanti provenienti da Italia, Egitto, Sudan, Etiopia, Kenya, Paesi Bassi e Finlandia sono intervenuti alla Conferenza regionale tra più attori del progetto “WATDEV – Climate Smart WATer Management and Sustainable DEVelopment for Food and Agriculture in East Africa”, l’8 e il 9 marzo 2023, a Nairobi.
Il project officer della Commissione Europea – DG INTPA, Etienne Coyette, in collegamento da Bruxelles ha rivolto un indirizzo di saluto ai partecipanti, evidenziando la pertinenza e l’importanza del Progetto WATDEV per le politiche e gli obiettivi del Programma DeSIRA dell’Unione Europea, in quanto finalizzato a far fronte e a mitigare gli effetti dal cambiamento climatico in Africa orientale e in Egitto, attraverso la ricerca e l’innovazione nella gestione dell’acqua e del suolo. In rappresentanza della Delegazione dell’UE a Nairobi, Stephen Wathome, ha partecipato e contribuito alla discussione in entrambe le giornate di incontri. I lavori sono stati introdotti da Martino Melli, Direttore dell’Ufficio AICS del Cairo, Agenzia Esecutiva del progetto. Il CIHEAM Bari, in qualità di coordinatore scientifico del consorzio di progetto, ha assicurato il coordinamento scientifico dei processi partecipativi della Conferenza.
Rappresentanti di alto livello del Ministero dell’Agricoltura della Repubblica del Kenya, partner di Progetto e membri del Forum degli Stakeholder hanno condiviso i risultati degli incontri locali dei mesi scorsi. I Membri del Forum degli Stakeholder con i partner di progetto, divisi in gruppi di lavoro per Paese, hanno poi individuato le migliori pratiche tra quelle preselezionate, che potranno rispondere ai bisogni specifici per un utilizzo efficiente e sostenibile dell’acqua in agricoltura e per degli ecosistemi agricoli resilienti. Sono stati, inoltre, identificati i siti d’intervento e le categorie di beneficiari delle future attività di formazione in loco. Il Forum degli Stakeholder del Progetto WATDEV è composto da eminenti rappresentanti di istituzioni di ricerca e accademiche, autorità pubbliche nazionali e locali ed attori della filiera agricola dei quattro paesi africani target del progetto.
La Conferenza regionale dell’8 marzo è stata ospitata presso la sede di KALRO (Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization) mentre l’ASARECA (Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa) ha facilitato la discussione del primo giorno.
Il 9 marzo, la 1° Riunione annuale del partenariato di progetto ha rappresentato una tappa altrettanto significativa per discutere ed esaminare i progressi conseguiti nel piano di attività tecniche e le scadenze e procedure per la gestione amministrativa, finanziaria e della comunicazione di progetto. Presieduta da Claudio Bogliotti del CIHEAM Bari, la riunione ha consentito ai partner di definire il piano di lavoro del secondo anno, con particolare riferimento al calendario dei moduli di formazione nei siti d’intervento ed agli studi di fattibilità con le comunità locali, che forniranno dati per le fasi di modellizzazione del progetto.

The second meeting of the SAFIAL project Steering Committee was held in Tirana on 7 March to present the preliminary results and discuss the work plan for the forthcoming period.
Results achieved by the project: the new Infrastructure for AKU Durres border inspection point is ready to operate for food inspection and sampling according to the national monitoring plan (watch facebook page).
The AKU Durres Laboratories for food and phytosanitary testing have been improved with new equipment and furniture; the ISUV laboratories are also being upgraded and to that end, the rehabilitation of the phytosanitary laboratory facilities has been completed. In addition, a specialised training programme was delivered in Italy to a group of ISUV experts on laboratory standards and diagnosis of quarantine pests.
Thanks to this wide support, broader controls can be carried out on imported food products by means of proper physical and analytical checks. Furthermore, the project co-financed the MARD lobby rehabilitation, thus helping to bring institutions closer to the Albanian population, the final beneficiary of the initiative.
For the forthcoming work plan, activities will focus on consolidating the results achieved so far; the project is about to start the new component for strengthening the Albanian veterinary system, with the technical assistance of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale Abruzzo e Molise (IZSAM).
ll 7 marzo scorso si è tenuto a Tirana il secondo incontro del Comitato di pilotaggio del progetto SAFIAL per presentare i risultati preliminari e discutere del prossimo piano di lavoro.
Risultati raggiunti dal progetto: è stata ultimata la nuova infrastruttura del posto di ispezione frontaliero dell’agenzia alimentare albanese di Durazzo che sarà operativo per l'ispezione dei prodotti alimentari e per il campionamento nell’ambito del piano di monitoraggio nazionale (vedi pagina Facebook).
I laboratori di analisi degli alimenti e fitosanitarie dell’agenzia alimentare albanese di Durazzo sono stati dotati di nuove attrezzature e arredi; analogamente i laboratori dell'ISUV (Istituto per la Sicurezza Alimentare e Veterinaria) saranno rafforzati, ed infatti al momento è stata completata la riqualificazione delle strutture che ospiteranno il nuovo laboratorio fitosanitario.
Inoltre, in Italia si è svolto un programma di formazione specialistica rivolto agli esperti dell'ISUV sugli standard di laboratorio e sulla diagnosi dei patogeni di quarantena. Grazie a questi stessi contributi, in Albania è possibile effettuare un numero maggiore di controlli sui prodotti alimentari importati attraverso adeguati accertamenti fisici e analitici. Inoltre, il progetto ha cofinanziato la riqualificazione del cortile interno del MARD contribuendo ad avvicinare le istituzioni alla popolazione albanese, beneficiaria finale dell'iniziativa.
Per il prossimo piano di lavoro le attività progettuali si concentreranno sul consolidamento dei risultati raggiunti finora e sarà avviata la nuova componente sul rafforzamento del sistema veterinario albanese, con l'assistenza tecnica dell'Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise (IZSAM).
Il CIHEAM Bari e l’Università del Salento, nell’ambito del Progetto Creative@Hubs, lanciano una Manifestazione d’Interesse dedicata ad aspiranti imprenditori e innovatori nei settori Agrifood e Creativo/Culturale con un’idea innovativa in fase di sviluppo o in stato embrionale.
La Call è dedicata a idee di Team. Saranno selezionati, infatti, 70 partecipanti tra i 18 e i 35 anni, diplomati e domiciliati in Puglia.
Le idee selezionate parteciperanno ad un PERCORSO DI ACCOMPAGNAMENTO che avrà lo scopo di supportare la creazione o la crescita delle idee presentate in base al loro stato progettuale.
Il percorso di formazione “Rural Living Lab”, della durata di 2 mesi circa, sarà strutturato attraverso due sessioni: una di formazione e mentoring con docenti, ricercatori ed esperti nazionali ed internazionali e una di networking e condivisione con imprese senior ed esperti pugliesi nei settori agrifood e creativo-culturale.
La formazione in presenza sarà erogata nelle sedi dei due enti proponenti (Università del Salento e CIHEAM Bari).
Al termine del Percorso di formazione “RURAL LIVING LAB” verrà rilasciato, a tutti i partecipanti, un attestato di frequenza dell’attività e del progetto CREATIVE@HUBS. Inoltre verrà organizzata una “Pitch Competition” tra i Team partecipanti e i primi tre classificati potranno accedere a servizi o prodotti per agevolare lo sviluppo delle idee innovative candidate.

The first Advanced Short Course on Water Management and Wastewater Treatments for Agricultural Use, attended by 7 foreign female and 6 foreign male graduates, ended on 10 March.
This programme is one of the goals of the International Water School. The training was delivered by Acquedotto Pugliese (AQP), CIHEAM Bari (Italian institute of the Centre International de Hautes Etudes Agronomiques Méditerranéennes) and DICATECh (Department of Civil, Environmental, Land, Building and Chemical Engineering of Politecnico di Bari) and sponsored by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).
The course aimed to transfer technical and management knowledge, which is both specialised and not available in regular education programmes, with a focus on the elements of the 2030 Agenda's Sustainable Development Goal related to clean water.
Efficient and sustainable water resource management issues were addressed, along with topics concerning the whole drinking water cycle, wastewater treatment and reuse in agriculture.
The certificate award ceremony took place at Acquedotto Pugliese in Bari and was attended by Francesca Portincasa, director general of AQP, Nicola Lamaddalena, deputy director of CIHEAM Bari, and Andrea Volpe, manager of AQP.
Si è concluso il 10 marzo il primo corso avanzato sulla gestione delle acque e i trattamenti dei reflui per il riutilizzo agricolo, a cui hanno partecipato 7 ragazze e 6 ragazzi laureati stranieri.
L’advanced short course, che si inserisce negli obiettivi della Scuola Internazionale dell'Acqua, è stato realizzato da Acquedotto Pugliese (AQP), CIHEAM Bari (sede italiana del Centre International de Hautes Etudes Agronomiques Méditerranéennes) e DICATECh (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Ambientale, del Territorio, Edile e di Chimica del Politecnico di Bari), con il patrocinio dell’Agenzia italiana per la cooperazione allo sviluppo (AICS).
Il percorso formativo si è incentrato sul trasferimento di conoscenze tecniche e gestionali, specifiche e non disponibili nel campo ordinario dell'istruzione, con un focus sugli elementi dell'obiettivo di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell’Agenda 2030, legati all’acqua pulita. Sono state affrontate tematiche riguardanti la gestione efficiente e sostenibile delle risorse idriche, dell’intera filiera del ciclo potabile, il trattamento dei reflui e il riutilizzo in agricoltura.
La cerimonia di consegna degli attestati di partecipazione si è svolta nella sede di Bari dell’Acquedotto Pugliese e ha visto la partecipazione di Francesca Portincasa, direttrice generale di AQP, Nicola Lamaddalena, direttore aggiunto del CIHEAM Bari e Andrea Volpe, dirigente dell’AQP.
