Presenting the results of FutureEUAqua's 4-year activities, highlighting the challenges faced and the work still to be done, is the goal of the project's final conference to be held on 20 April, starting at 9 a.m., at CIHEAM Bari's Cosimo Lacirignola Campus.
FutureEUAqua has been funded by the European research and innovation (R&I) programme Horizon 2020 (2018-2023), with the overall objective of effectively promoting the sustainable, climate-resilient and environmentally friendly growth of organic and conventional aquaculture of the main European fish species, to meet the future challenges posed by increasing consumer demand for high quality, nutritious and responsibly produced food.
The final project conference is expected to be attended by about 100 representatives of organisations, institutions, the scientific community, and higher education and research centers working in aquaculture, from 20 countries in Northern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
As part of the project activities, CIHEAM Bari has designed and delivered, through its e-learning platform, the course on “Sustainable, resilient and climate friendly blue growth of EU aquaculture and beyond” to transfer the results of the studies conducted on feed, innovative feeding strategies, consumer perceptions and preferences concerning aquaculture products, and regulatory framework for aquaculture in the EU.
The training was provided to 357 participants from 73 countries (24% European countries and 76% non-EU Mediterranean countries), representing mostly ministries of agriculture, universities, associations and certification bodies.
The conference will be opened at 9 a.m. on Thursday 20 April by CIHEAM Bari’s Deputy Director Biagio Di Terlizzi. Presentations by partner representatives on the activities carried out during the 4-year project will follow.
The afternoon session will continue with a panel discussion on “How can aquaculture meet future challenges of high quality, nutritious and responsibly produced food?” addressing regional and international policy makers and stakeholders to pave the way for future collaborative project proposals and new initiatives in the organic and conventional aquaculture sector.
Panelists will include Patrizia Pitton, DG AGRI, and Birgit Van Tongelen, DG MARE, from the European Commission; Edoardo Cuoco, IFOAM director; Houssam Hamza, Aquaculture Officer at the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean; and Andrea Fabris, director of the Italian Fish Farmers Association. Giuseppe Lembo, president of the COISPA cooperative of researchers and technicians, will moderate the roundtable.
Presentare i risultati dei quattro anni di attività di FutureEUAqua, evidenziando le sfide affrontate e le attività da realizzare, è l’obiettivo della conferenza finale del progetto che si terrà il prossimo 20 aprile, con inizio alle ore 9, nel Campus Cosimo Lacirignola del CIHEAM Bari.
FutureEUAqua è stato finanziato dal programma europeo di ricerca e innovazione (R&I) Horizon 2020 (2018-2023), con l’obiettivo generale di promuovere efficacemente la crescita sostenibile -resiliente ai cambiamenti climatici e rispettosa dell'ambiente- dell'acquacoltura biologica e convenzionale delle principali specie ittiche europee, per rispondere alle sfide future rispetto alla crescente domanda dei consumatori di alimenti di alta qualità, nutritivi e prodotti in modo responsabile.
Alla conferenza finale di progetto è prevista la partecipazione di un centinaio di rappresentanti di organizzazioni, istituzioni, comunità scientifica, centri di alta formazione e ricerca operanti nel settore dell'acquacoltura, provenienti da 20 Paesi del Nord Europa, Nord Africa e Medio Oriente.
Tra le attività di progetto, il CIHEAM Bari ha progettato e, poi, erogato, attraverso la propria piattaforma di e-learning, il corso Sustainable, resilient and climate friendly blue growth of EU aquaculture and beyond (Crescita blu sostenibile, resiliente e rispettosa del clima, dell'acquacoltura dell'UE e di altri Paesi), allo scopo di trasferire i risultati degli studi condotti su mangimi, strategie di alimentazione innovative, percezione e preferenze dei consumatori dei prodotti dell'acquacoltura e quadro normativo per l'acquacoltura nell'UE.
La formazione è stata somministrata a 357 partecipanti, provenienti da 73 Paesi (24% Paesi europei e 76% Paesi mediterranei non UE), rappresentanti, perlopiù, di ministeri dell'Agricoltura, università, associazioni e enti di certificazione.
I lavori di giovedì 20 aprile saranno aperti, alle ore 9, dal direttore aggiunto del CIHEAM Bari, Biagio Di Terlizzi. Seguiranno gli interventi dei rappresentanti dei partner sulle attività svolte durante i 4 anni di progetto.
La sessione pomeridiana proseguirà con la tavola rotonda How aquaculture can meet future challenges of high quality, nutritious and responsibly produced food? (Come l'acquacoltura può rispondere alle sfide future di un cibo di alta qualità, nutriente e prodotto in modo responsabile?), per i responsabili politici e gli stakeholder regionali e internazionali, al fine di aprire la strada a future proposte di progetti collaborativi e nuove iniziative per il settore dell'acquacoltura biologica e convenzionale.
Parteciperanno per la Commissione Europea Patrizia Pitton, DG AGRI e Birgit Van Tongelen, DG MARE, Edoardo Cuoco, direttore IFOAM, Houssam Hamza, responsabile settore acquacoltura della Commissione Generale della Pesca per il Mediterraneo, Andrea Fabris, direttore dell’Associazione Piscicoltori Italiani. Modererà Giuseppe Lembo, presidente della cooperativa fra ricercatori e tecnici COISPA.
Il Cibo al Centro is the event taking place today, 14 April 2023, in the Great Hall of the University of Bari Aldo Moro, organised by the Interdepartmental Centre for Food and Health: Nutraceutics, Nutrigenomics, Gut Microbiota, Agriculture and Social Wellbeing, in collaboration, inter alia, with CIHEAM Bari.
The speaker lineup includes Roberto Capone, principal administrator at CIHEAM Bari, in the session titled 'At the heart of European strategies'.
The event is part of a broader training/information project designed for local stakeholders and focused on the close link between food and health The aim is to build up a virtuous network in the region that can bring research closer to companies, citizens and trade associations, for harmonised and successful growth of the agrifood and health sectors.
Il Cibo al Centro è il titolo dell’evento in programma il 14 aprile 2023 nell’Aula Magna dell’Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, organizzato dal Centro Interdipartimentale Cibo in salute: nutraceutica, nutrigenomica, microbiota intestinale, agricoltura e benessere sociale, in collaborazione, tra gli altri, con il CIHEAM Bari.
Tra i relatori che parteciperanno al convegno, vi sarà Roberto Capone, amministratore principale del CIHEAM Bari, che interverrà nella sessione: Al centro delle strategie europee.
L’evento si inserisce in un progetto più ampio di formazione/informazione agli stakeholder territoriali sulle tematiche legate allo stretto legame che unisce il cibo alla salute, allo scopo di costruire sul territorio regionale una rete virtuosa che possa avvicinare la ricerca alle aziende, ai cittadini e alle associazioni di categoria, per una crescita armoniosa e proficua nel settore agroalimentare e della salute.
Agrilevante 2023 set off today at CIHEAM Bari. The Italian Institute of CIHEAM hosted this morning, on its “Cosimo Lacirignola” campus, the press conference to launch the international exhibition of machinery and technologies for Mediterranean agriculture, which will take place at Fiera del Levante di Bari on 5- 8 October 2023.
Addressing the journalists at the conference and, via streaming, the participants from Mediterranean countries, CIHEAM Bari Director Maurizio Raeli emphasised the central role of the Institute in developing agricultural knowledge and technologies and the importance of the ongoing partnership with FederUnacoma. "Today we are signing, for the third time, a Memorandum of Understanding between Federunacoma and CIHEAM Bari, aiming to promote Italian know-how for machinery and technologies also in the field of irrigation and precision agriculture in third countries, where food safety and innovation led by Italian players can generate development and employment opportunities”.
The exhibition will take place in a challenging yet promising context for the development of mechanisation as pointed out by FederUnacoma President Alessandro Malavolti, who highlighted the problems caused by increasing water scarcity and land property fragmentation, and the growth potential of the Mediterranean agricultural economies.
“The event in Bari is designed to meet the demand for targeted technologies covering all the main supply chains in the area”, explained by FederUnacoma director general Simona Rapastella, " especially cereals crops, livestock, wine, olive oil and above all fruit and vegetables, and to showcase the new hi-tech solutions provided by cutting-edge electronic and robotic applications”.
“Agrilevante will not only engage Fiera del Levante, but also the whole city of Bari. This big Mediterranean exhibition will be a huge challenge in terms of organisation and from a cultural point of view," stated Bari's deputy mayor Eugenio Di Sciascio, "because now, with a war looming on Europe's borders, food safety and production models are again taking centre stage.
Innovation is an ongoing renewal and development process for agriculture, a sector that needs continued progress, and therefore a new approach. Therefore, as underlined by Puglia Region’s councillor for agriculture Donato Pentassuglia closing the press conference, “Agrilevante is expected to strengthen the role of agriculture as a lever for human development and for peace and solidarity among peoples”.
Parte dal CIHEAM Bari la corsa verso l’edizione 2023 di Agrilevante. Nella sede italiana del CIHEAM – Campus “Cosimo Lacirignola” – si è, infatti, tenuta questa mattina la conferenza stampa di lancio dell’esposizione internazionale delle macchine e delle tecnologie per l’agricoltura del Mediterraneo, che andrà in scena nel quartiere fieristico di Bari dal 5 all’8 ottobre 2023.
Dinanzi ai giornalisti presenti e in collegamento streaming dai Paesi del Bacino del Mediterraneo, il Direttore del CIHEAM Bari, Maurizio Raeli, ha ricordato, non soltanto il ruolo centrale svolto dall’istituto nello sviluppo delle conoscenze e delle tecnologie agricole, ma soprattutto l’importanza della partnership con FederUnacoma. «Oggi rinnoviamo, per la terza volta, la firma del Protocollo d’Intesa tra Federunacoma e CIHEAM Bari, allo scopo di promuovere il know how italiano della meccanizzazione e delle tecnologie legate anche ai settori dell'irrigazione e dell’agricoltura di precisione nei Paesi terzi, dove - ha spiegato Raeli - la sicurezza alimentare e l'innovazione italiana potranno fornire opportunità di sviluppo e occupazione».
In questa prospettiva, la rassegna si inserisce in un contesto molto complesso, ma anche molto promettente per lo sviluppo della meccanizzazione: questo è quanto ha segnalato nel suo intervento il presidente di FederUnacoma, Alessandro Malavolti, che ha evidenziato sia le criticità determinate dalla riduzione delle risorse idriche e dalla frammentazione delle proprietà fondiarie, sia le potenzialità di crescita delle economie agricole del Mediterraneo.
La rassegna barese sarà impostata proprio per rispondere alla domanda di tecnologie specifiche per tutte le principali filiere dell’area - ha spiegato il direttore generale di FederUnacoma Simona Rapastella - con particolare riferimento a quelle cerealicole, zootecniche, vitivinicole, olivicolo-olearie e soprattutto ortofrutticole, e per mostrare i nuovi scenari tecnologici generatisi dalle più avanzate applicazioni elettroniche e robotiche.
Un evento come Agrilevante coinvolge non soltanto l’Ente Fiera del Levante, ma l’intera città capoluogo. La grande kermesse del Mediterraneo è una sfida impegnativa non soltanto sotto il profilo organizzativo, ma anche sul piano culturale - ha detto il vicesindaco di Bari Eugenio Di Sciascio - perché in questo momento storico, con una guerra alle porte dell’Europa, il tema della sicurezza alimentare e dei modelli produttivi acquista una nuova centralità.
Per un settore agricolo che deve progredire costantemente, l’innovazione costituisce un processo di evoluzione naturale e di rinnovamento rispetto al quale è necessario proporre un approccio nuovo. In questa prospettiva - ha sostenuto a conclusione della conferenza stampa, l’assessore regionale all’agricoltura Donato Pentassuglia - la rassegna di Agrilevante deve rafforzare il ruolo dell’agricoltura come leva dello sviluppo umano e come fattore di pace e solidarietà tra i popoli.
The 17th session of the IPPC-FAO Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM 17), hosted at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 27 to 31 March 2023, convened, for the first time in person since the COVID-19 pandemic, delegates from the national plant protection services of 140 countries (National Plant Protection Organizations -NPPOs), representatives of the United Nations and specialised agencies (FAO regional offices; International Atomic Energy Agency; International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture), governmental organisations (African Union; CIHEAM; Economic Community of West African States; Eurasian Economic Commission; Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture; International Seed Testing Association; World Bank Group; World Trade Organization) and other non-governmental organisations.
After the opening address by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu and IPPC Secretary Osama El-Lissy, several initiatives undertaken by IPPC Secretariat were presented, including:
- The 1st Plant Health Conference, held in London in September 2022 and focused on phytosanitary challenges and control issues, with about 500 participants from 74 countries and international bodies active in the field of Plant Health (including CIHEAM Bari).
- The 'IPPC ePhyto (Electronic Phytosanitary Certificate) Solution', a tool designed to turn information from a paper phytosanitary certificate into a digital 'ePhyto' phytosanitary certificate.
- ‘Prevention, Preparedness and Response' measures for priority pests according to the IPPC Secretariat (e.g., guidelines for Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense TR4).
- The 'One Health' approach with special emphasis on the use of antibiotics as a potential cause of increased antimicrobial resistance in humans and the environment (with a dedicated side session organised by EFSA on the ongoing Plantibio project).
In the plenary session, Dr. Anna Maria D'Onghia from CIHEAM Bari presented a technical-scientific contribution emphasizing research innovation in remote sensing applied to plant health: ‘The innovative approach of CIHEAM Bari in early pest detection by remote sensing’.
Such an innovative tool was highly appreciated by many delegates from CPM countries and international bodies. OIRSA (Organismo International Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria), among others, called for a collaboration with CIHEAM Bari to develop a remote sensing system allowing early detection of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense TR4, especially on banana crop.
A proposal was also made to the IPPC Secretariat to set up a working group to draw up relevant protocols for the application of remote sensing by the National Plant Protection Organisations (NPPOs).
Alla Diciassettesima sessione della Commissione IPPC-FAO per le misure fitosanitarie (CPM 17), tenutasi nel quartier generale della FAO a Roma dal 27 al 31 marzo 2023, hanno partecipato, per la prima volta in presenza dopo la pandemia COVID-19, delegazioni dei servizi fitosanitari nazionali di 140 Paesi (National Plant Protection Organizations -NPPOs) rappresentanti delle Nazioni Unite ed Agenzie specializzate (FAO regional offices; International Atomic Energy Agency; International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture), di organizzazioni governative (African Union; CIHEAM; Economic Community of West African States; Eurasian Economic Commission; Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture; International Seed Testing Association; World Bank Group; World Trade Organization) e di altre organizzazioni non governative.
Dopo l’apertura della Commission on Phytosanitary Measures da parte del Direttore Generale della FAO, Qu Dongyu, e del Segretario IPPC, Osama El-Lissy, sono state presentate diverse iniziative intraprese dall’IPPC, tra le quali:
Alla sessione plenaria della conferenza il contributo tecnico-scientifico del CIHEAM Bari è stato presentato dalla dott.ssa Anna Maria D’Onghia, che ha messo in rilievo le novità della ricerca sul telerilevamento applicato al Plant Health 'The innovative approach of CIHEAM Bari in early pest detection by remote sensing' per l’individuazione precoce delle problematiche fitosanitarie. L’innovativo strumento è stato apprezzato da diverse delegazioni dei Paesi della CPM e da organismi internazionali. L’OIRSA (Organismo International Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria), in particolare, ha chiesto una collaborazione con il CIHEAM Bari per la messa a punto di un sistema di telerilevamento per l’identificazione precoce del Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense TR4, soprattutto sul banano.
È stata, altresì, avanzata una proposta all’IPPC per la creazione di un gruppo di lavoro atto alla stesura di protocolli per l'applicazione del telerilevamento da parte dei National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs).
On 1st April, Frida Krifca took office as the new President of CIHEAM’s Governing Board.

CIHEAM is involved in 90 transnational projects, mobilizing nearly 50 countries, and involving more than 600 different organizations and research centres in agriculture. It is a great privilege and a huge responsibility of Mediterranean countries that mandated for the first time an Albanian and for the first time a woman, in the position of the President of this important organization (...). My main objective will be to reposition the Mediterranean region at the centre of the political agendas of the different countries. The reasons are economic, such as trade and agriculture, food and non-food products and market access. We have a long way to go and I am very honoured to undertake this journey with you."

Mrs Frida Krifca is Minister of Agriculture of Albania as of September 2021.
She has 22 years of experience in administration and management, with a special focus on the development and strengthening of the financial sector, use of financial services and business development, meeting national, international and international economic, legal and structural objectives.
During the period July 2017 – September 2021 she held the position of General Director in the Agency for Agricultural and Rural Development where she was responsible for the administration of state budget support schemes in support of farmers, ensuring transparency and guaranteeing control mechanisms in investments and payments.
During the period November 2020 – February 2021, Mrs Krifca was a Guest Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Agribusiness, Agricultural University of Tirana in the Rural Development Course, for the subject Rural Economics.
In the period October 2013 – July 2017, Mrs Krifca held the position of Director General of USAID Financial Services Voluntary Bodies, where she provided technical assistance to public financial institutions and has identified, developed and managed numerous development, financial, fiscal and legal projects in Albania and other countries.
During the 151st Meeting of the CIHEAM Governing Board, she was elected President of the CIHEAM Governing Board, taking duties on April 1st 2023.

On 27 March 2023, the Albanian Minister of Agriculture Frida Krifca, accompanied by CIHEAM Bari’s Deputy Director Biagio DI Terlizzi, visited the laboratories of the National Food Agency (AKU) in Durres that have been upgraded with the equipment funded by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency (AICS) under the SAFIAL project implemented by CIHEAM Bari.
Minister Krifca expressed her appreciation to AICS and welcomed CIHEAM Bari's commitment, pointing out that such equipment will help improve safety of food products on the Albanian domestic market and strengthen controls of quarantine diseases. Thanks to this investment, collaboration with CIHEAM Bari and the Italian Cooperation is further expanded to jointly address the sector's development priorities.
Il 27 marzo 2023, la Ministra dell'Agricoltura albanese, Frida Krifca, alla presenza del Direttore aggiunto del CIHEAM Bari, Biagio Di Terlizzi, ha visitato i laboratori dell'Agenzia Alimentare Nazionale (AKU) di Durazzo che sono stati riqualificati con le attrezzature finanziate dall'Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (AICS), nell'ambito del progetto SAFIAL realizzato dal CIHEAM Bari.
La Ministra Krifca, nel ringraziare l'AICS, ha espresso apprezzamento per l'impegno del CIHEAM Bari, sottolineando che tali attrezzature contribuiranno a migliorare la sicurezza dei prodotti alimentari sul mercato interno albanese e a rafforzare i controlli per le malattie da quarantena. Grazie a questo investimento, si consolida la collaborazione con il CIHEAM Bari e la Cooperazione italiana per affrontare le priorità di sviluppo del settore.
