Applied research activities are based on a problem-solving approach in order to face the challenges of the Euro-Mediterranean region. Actions are designed and carried out in a rigorously scientific manner, relying upon basic knowledge and sustainable innovative solutions for the target areas. They combine the most advanced scientific and technological knowledge with effective and practical solutions for the areas where they may be applied to produce the best impact on the territory and local populations. 

CIHEAM Bari research objectives are pursued thanks to the expertise, research skills and cooperation efforts of highly motivated and professional internal and external researchers, instructors, technicians and administrative staff of the Institute and of the institutions and countries involved in the programmes, projects and networking activities.

Research activities are carried out in the framework of our Master courses, PhD collaborations, projects as well as through research networks. Our main research thematic areas are:

Environment and natural resources management

  • Ecosystem-centred approach to manage natural resources in agriculture and mitigate climate change impacts on different agricultural systems
  • Life cycle approach for efficient use of conventional and non-conventional resources, for a sustainable food chain management (saline and waste waters, soil fertility, biomass recycling, composting, pyrolysis/biochar, extraction of biostimulants)
  • Enhancement and protection of native genotypes of Mediterranean crops
  • Sustainable management of invasive pests/pathogens including surveillance and control

Food security, safety and nutrition

  • Sustainability of the Mediterranean food systems including food safety, security and nutrition, energy use, natural resources optimisation
  • Pest/pathogen identification, characterisation, epidemiology and control
  • Impacts of organic agriculture on food security and sustainable livelihoods in urban and rural communities

Innovative agricultural production systems

  • Information technologies for geomatics, pest management, soil and water resources management
  • Innovative, eco-friendly and automated technologies and methods for agricultural production, e.g. precision agriculture and irrigation, post-harvest techniques
  • Typical and traditional agro-food products, nutraceutical compounds in food, quality and authenticity of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)

Economics, management and development of rural areas

  • Governance models for resources management and development of rural areas
  • Women empowerment and gender equality with special attention to vulnerable groups
  • Internationalisation policy and marketing strategies; quality management, organic trade data, market, consumer and value/supply chain analysis
  • Rural policies for organic agriculture in Mediterranean and south-eastern European countries; study of territorial organic initiatives (ecoregions, bio-districts)
  • Sustainable development of coastal areas through knowledge sharing, dialogue, empowerment, capacity building of coastal communities and stakeholders for the enhancement of resources
