Project Objective
Enhancing blue growth and competitiveness of MSMEs by developing action plan and transferring innovations for the valorization of the blue crab products and by-products
Summary of the project
Over the past decade, the invasive blue crab has spread rapidly across the Mediterranean, damaging biodiversity and local economies. This species preys on native species such as clams and mussels, causing a drastic reduction in their populations of up to 90% in some areas of the Adriatic.
The CRABoost project, funded by the South Adriatic Program, aims to transform a serious environmental, social, and economic threat - the uncontrolled spread of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) - into a concrete business opportunity for fishing and processing companies. The partnership comprises Italian, Albanian, and Montenegrin public and private partners, under the supervision and coordination of CIHEAM Bari.
Currently, blue crab supply chains are deficient, and its low value discourages investment. CRABoost aims to improve business competitiveness, increase the value of the species, and build an efficient supply chain by:
International collaboration is essential. By working together, project partners can share valuable knowledge, develop joint strategies, and implement innovative solutions adaptable to different regions.
