CIHEAM Bari Institute

CIHEAM Bari is the Italian headquarter of CIHEAM (Centre International de Hautes Etudes Agronomiques Méditerranéennes), an intergovernmental organization founded in 1962 under the aegis of the OECD and the Council of Europe, which operates through its 4 Institutes based in Bari (Italy), Chania (Greece), Montpellier (France) and Zaragoza (Spain), while the General Secretariat is based in Paris.

CIHEAM Bari enjoys the privileges of extra-territoriality granted to international organizations by the Republic of Italy through the Establishment agreement signed to the Italian Government in 1962, ratified in Italy with law N. 932 of 13 July 1965 and with the supplementary protocol to the Agreement ratified with law N. 159 of 26 May 2000.

the construction and the dedication

The building of CIHEAM Bari campus started in 1970 near Valenzano (Bari). The current headquarters were inaugurated on 27 October 1972. On 27 May 2022, on the occasion of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of CIHEAM, the CIHEAM Bari Campus was dedicated to Cosimo Lacirignola, who held both the role of Secretary General of CIHEAM and the Director of the Bari Institute.

Biagio Di Terlizzi, Director of CIHEAM Bari
Since June 2025, Biagio Di Terlizzi is the new director of CIHEAM Bari.

Formerly Deputy Director and Head of the Cooperation Area, Di Terlizzi has made a decisive contribution to the Institute’s development, strengthening synergies with local territories and international cooperation partners. His in-depth knowledge of CIHEAM Bari, combined with solid experience in managing complex projects in strategic contexts across the Mediterranean and Africa, represents a guarantee of continuity, renewal, and the ability to address future challenges with expertise.
