CIHEAM Bari and Egypt: A Partnership for Sustainable Rural Development

29 July 2026

Cooperation between CIHEAM Bari and Egypt has been built on dialogue, shared expertise and a common commitment to strengthening rural communities and promoting sustainable agricultural development.

On July 26 the Director of CIHEAM Bari, Biagio Di Terlizzi, met with H.E. Alaa Farouk, Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, to reaffirm a long-standing collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR) and the Agricultural Research Center (ARC).

Behind this institutional meeting lies a shared goal: creating tangible opportunities for farmers and local communities. Together, CIHEAM Bari and MALR  continue to work to strengthen agricultural value chains, improve food security and promote sustainable rural development.

The discussion focused on ongoing initiatives supporting the Ministry’s programme for the development of sustainable rural villages:

  • " 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗴𝘆𝗽𝘁" which aims to improve the living conditions and incomes of farmers, youth and women through a sustainable and integrated development model.
  • "𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗣 – 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀" project, seeks to promote more sustainable and efficient production models in response to water scarcity and the impacts of climate change.

These initiatives are funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and implemented by CIHEAM Bari.

By connecting institutions, knowledge and people, CIHEAM Bari continues to foster dialogue between Italy and Egypt, turning long-standing partnerships into concrete actions that generate new opportunities for sustainable agriculture, innovation and rural development.
